We Want YOUR Feedback

By: doebtown
We don't do this often . . . we've NEVER done this before. But--like ALL good websites--we want twodoebs.com to serve YOU well. And your feedback on how you enjoy this site would be VERY helpful in helping us plan how we write the content we post up here.

So would you PLEASE follow the link below and fill out a SHORT survey about how you use twodoebs.com? It's ONLY 10 questions and it should take you less than 5 minutes to fill out. Your responses will NOT be posted on this site, so those of you who are keyboard-shy and never post comments will not have to break with tradition. But getting a sense of who's actually reading this page WILL be helpful to us in knowing what we should be writing.

To do us a big favor and fill out the survey, please click here. Many thanks!

Comments:
Okay, just came across your blog randomly, and I must ask: What kind of camera are you using? Lens? Flash? Your photos are AMAZING!!!

**********
You have got, got, GOT to be kidding me. But it's SO flattering, I'll happily take the complement.

Thank you.

(You hear that, David S.?--"amazing!" . . . G?--did YOU hear that: "amazing"!)

I shoot still pictures on a Canon 40D. I usually use the kit lens that came with the camera, which is a EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens. Sometimes, though, I switch out to a EF 50mm f/1.8 'cause it's so damn fast, so I can shoot in really low light situations. That's what I used for the pictures from Kate's Lobster Party.

I've also got a really long lens and a macro lens, but I haven't done much with either of them. Stay tuned to see what I come up with.

As far as flash goes, up until very recently, I've tried very hard to shoot with only available light. I try hard to stay away from the onboard flash on the camera (hence the EF 50mm f/1.8).

Just recently, though, I've been messing around with some Canon Speedlite 580EXs. The pictures from Kate's Lobster Party had one mounted in the camera's hot shoe and a second remote Speedlite that we moved around the room, lighting either the background or the subjects.

All of the video that we shoot comes from an iPhone 3GS.

Thanks again--you've made my day!

Kate's Lobster Party

By: doebtown
I've been to some fun parties in my day. But they've all been--really--1) weddings or 2) parties that my PARENTS were the true invited guests and I was just a tagger-alonger. That's why I was SO pleased to attend the annual Lobster Party thrown by Kate A. last night . . . it was a FANTASTIC party of WEDDING proportions and it was attended solely by Pittsburghers from OUR generation.

First of all, this was the first time I'd been in Kate's Lawrenceville home and it's truly charming. More importantly, though, she's REALLY got this party down to a science. Part of the fun was just watchin' her conduct this event like an orchestra. Honestly, what she REALLY did was throw a party with THREE separate seatings--clean place settings and table cloths for each. It was REALLY impressive.

Also noteworthy was seeing my old friend David B. again--man, it's probably been 20 years since I saw him. We used to dissect caterpillars on Timber Town together (does any of that mean anything to anybody?).

I used a remote flash for these pictures. It was the first time I've ever used multiple Speedlites in the field. I had lots of fun with THAT, too. (and many thanks to Kati for being a great assistant!)

So glad you both could make it!

Was there ham involved in the taking of these pictures (which, by the way, are adorable!)?

**********
Nope! No ham involved at all. Just a dog who did what we asked him to and sat there very patiently.

I love the one where Libby goes for webber's eye!

Things I Like

By: doebtown
- Styrofoam cups
- Kicking my work shoes off into the closet at the beginning of a weekend
- Audio Books on iPods
- Video Glasses
- Rocking Chairs
- The HSBC ads in airport Jetways that contrast things some poeple value, which other people de-value.

Comments:
Oh . . . I just got that THIS is the posting Paula wanted me to comment on with respect to Rocking Chairs. I was a little confused where you were talking about Rocking Chairs.

Guest Contributor: Yak's Best Pictures

By: doebtown
As a special treat for our loyal twodoebs fans, I'd like to present the following sideshow of my father's best photographs. He's, OBVIOUSLY, very talented and his work is just lots of fun--some might even say "neat!" I learn tons about my OWN photography just by hanging around him (and mooching all of his gear!). Many thanks to him for sharing his pictures!

Comments:
Wow, your father is a great photographer. Is there a site that he posts his stuff too (Flickr/Picasa/Photo.net/etc.?) I'd love to see more.

**********
Hey, Kenny. My dad was really glad to hear your compliments--thanks.

Unfortunately, no . . . he does NOT have his library posted online yet. And it IS too bad 'cause I know he's got some really great stuff that he didn't include with this allotment (we have one he took hanging in our dining room that I KNOW he doesn't have here). We'll have to work on him on that one (or just get him to post more stuff here!).

On ANOTHER note, though, I stumbled onto YOUR Picasa library the other day. And I said--out LOUD!--I said, "Woah! Who takes these pictures for Kenny and Nicole?" And Kati said, "Kenny." And I said, "Wow. He'll got some skills."

So--nice work!
