20 Years! . . .

By: doebtown
If you don't know what "20 Years" is (or why to CONGRATULATE me for "20 Years"), ask me the next time you speak with me (or Kati!).

Comments:
So? Inquiring minds want to know. What happened on June 17, 1988? Was that your fourth grade graduation?

Euro 2008

By: Doebette

So, I am learning about another semi-global sporting event during my final days here in London. The Euro 2008, or UEFA Cup (United European Football Association). From what I can tell this is a once per 4 year event where the best of Europe play each other in a World Cup style tournament. 'Cept of course this just has Europe, not the whole world.

Now England is auspiciously missing from this tournament and I haven't researched enough about it to learn why. But the commentators HAVE been talking about the necessary qualifiers to get in. Perhaps England just failed to quality, which would be surprising. Alas . . . it's awesome and fun to watch. A commentator here on the BBC claimed this is the third largest (or maybe he said 'most watched') sporting event behind World Cup and the Olympics. I found that stat really interesting and believable but have not been able to substantiate the claim.
Anyway, it's awesome...here are some links:

Germany's leading on Poland right now 1-0. Go Germany!!

Hi K
I loved the posting abaout Shakespeare in the park. I am so envious.
Keep the great pics coming.

UPDATE: Germany WINS!!

First you are in London when the city decides to have a big drinking fest (ok, protest) at the Tube stations... now you are in Europe during the Euro 2008 tournament! That is just awesome.

Enjoy the games. Since England is not in it, I say pull for Portugal. They've got the best player in the World right now... Cristiano Ronaldo!

. . . Wherefore art thou Romeo!

By: Doebette
As I said in my last post, I was coming back to my newly beloved Regent's Park this afternoon to see Romeo and Juliet. Like I said Wednesday night - I was just blown over with how wonderful this experience was. I don't know if any Twodoebs readers have occassion to find themselves in London over this summer, but if you do, come to the park and take in some theatre!

Wow- It was a beautiful show, yes it made my eyes well up. And what really astonished me was most of the actors from Twelfth Night were in this same production. MAN that's a lot of Shakespeare to learn! Both shows were set NOT in shakespearean times which was neat. Twelfth Night had a 20's/Zoot Suit feel to it, and Romeo and Juliet was set more in the 40's/50's, almost had a West Side Story feeling to it. Phew - it was SUCH a great way to spend Saturday.

I also said my last set of pics weren't so great, so here is hopefully a better set.

The beautiful gates welcoming you to the inner circle of the park.

Some of the gorgeous rose gardens inside the Park.

The crowd gathering at the entrace gates to the
theatre

The weather called for mostly sunny today. Apparently this counts as 'mostly sunny' here in jolly old England!

Here is the stage. This was mostly the same set as Twelfth Night with the addition of the "balcony". I WANTED deeply to take another picture of the last scene but the ushers were dutifully "tsk-tsking" picture takers. But look at this photo and imagine the cast in their funeral black clothing with Romeo and Juliet in white, draped tragically over each other with red rose petals all around. Sigh.
Well all in all this Open Air Theatre has been the best surprise of this trip to London. And while as much as I've enjoyed it, I can't wait to get back to my OWN Romeo in just a few days!

Best night I've had since Doebs was here!

By: Doebette
So tonight I went to the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park for my first of two Shakespeare plays there. Tonight was Twelfth Night. I have been enjoying lots of time at the park but never been there for a show. WHAT a treat it was! The show was very well done, the acting was gorgeous and the location spectacular.

The open air theatre is nestled within the park so there's a surrounding of trees and flowers everywhere. The entire theatre and stage are uncovered so the surrounding wall of trees make for a nice feeling of enclosure. The wall of seats facing the stage is on its opposite side a grill and bar completely wrapped in christmas lights.

You can bring in a picnic as I did, and tonight was the first nice, non-rainy night we've had here in London for about a week or so. I lucked out with the weather for sure! I am VERY excited to go back Saturday afternoon for Romeo and Juliet!! Fingers crossed that the weather holds out for me.

PS- I know these aren't great pictures, but the camera battery died so I didn't get much chance. Will post again after R & J

Comments:
I'll bet the performance wasn't as good as when Matt was Sebastian at SA!

I actually DID the Puck monologue for Kati when we walked past the theater.

But look at PAULIE posting up on twoebs!

His Puck monologue was LOVELY. And GO Paulie for making a post! Congrats!

Go Pens!

By: Doebette

Well. It's definitely me. I watched a couple minutes last night then watched one of the Penguins on a breakaway just fall down for no reason and figured this game would go the way of the others I'd stayed up all night for - only to learn it was another amazing game last night.

Pens fans, I promise I won't watch any more games! Go Pens!!

Comments:
Sorry Pens! I SWEAR I didn't watch last night. Maybe next year. At least you got to end your season on home ice.

GASP! I'm stuck!

By: Doebette
The airline bringing me home went out of business YESTERDAY.

SHOOT (actually I'm thinking of different words to shout but wouldn't want to offend any sensitive twodoebs readers.

oh snap....at least your not stuck somewhere frightening.

And at least I didn't show up at the airport to find a locked door like some passengers. I have time (and a company credit card) to sort out other options.

Here are some interesting articles I've been reading. One guy planned a vacation with 11 friends - only to show up to locked doors. MAN I'd be SUPA mad. What really stinks is the airport, Luton, is in the middle of nowhere and has VERY limited service. So it's not like at Heathrow or Gatwick where you could just walk down the hall to another provider. Some people REALLY got the short end of the stick on this one!

Seems Virgin Atlantic will offer special fares for us Poor Silverjet Saps so we can get back without paying another $2k.
