The Honeymoon Journal--Second Entry

By: doebtown

Today, Sweet Kati and I visited Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza--in simple terms--is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site in Yucatán, Mexico built by the Maya civilization. Rather than simply cut and paste (as I've just done), I'll suggest that any interest in what Chichen Itza is all about visit the Chichen Itza Article from Wikipedia--there one can find EXCELLENT resources including articles and pictures.

I enjoyed Chichen Itza. It was a long drive and it was VERY hot out there, but it gave us an opportunity to get out of the resort, it gave us a sense of historical interest on our honeymoon, and it was pretty impressive.

I was, however, VERY bummed out to hear that the rumors are true and tourists are no longer permitted to climb El Castillo--the main pyramid (or really any other pyramids, for that matter). I was also annoyed that in the last year, over five hundred *vendors* have been given permission to hawk their wares inside the park, so we were pretty constantly barraged with people trying to sell us stuff (read: junk).

This trip ALSO gave us a chance to peak out the little towns that we drove through. MAN do these people live a different life than what we're used to back in Brooklyn. REWARD to whomever comes up with the first quote from one of the "Vacation" movies to humorously end this otherwise sad paragraph . . .

Comments:
Yes! Yes, Big Sister, you are the WINNER! I had that quote SOMEWHERE in the tips of my fingers, but I just couldn't find find it (and I even LOOKED around for it with Google). Thanks a bunch!

We are, indeed, having a great time. And we haven't bought ANY junk [yet], thank you very much.
